Virgin Atlantic is joining forces with Joby Aviation to introduce electric air taxis in the UK, aiming to revolutionize urban travel with zero-emission flights. This partnership will enable fast, sustainable transport between major airports and city centers, significantly reducing travel time compared to traditional ground transportation.
Joby’s all-electric aircraft, designed to carry a pilot and four passengers, can reach speeds of up to 200 mph and travel up to 100 miles on a single charge. These air taxis are notably quieter than helicopters, making them ideal for urban environments. The partnership plans to establish a network of dedicated landing and takeoff sites, known as “vertiports,” across the country. One proposed route would cut travel time from Heathrow Airport to Canary Wharf to just eight minutes, offering a quick alternative to congested roads. Pricing is expected to be competitive with premium ride-sharing options.
Virgin Atlantic will play a key role in marketing the service, working with regulators, and helping develop the necessary infrastructure at major airports. However, before the service can take off, Joby must secure type certification from aviation authorities to ensure the aircraft meet strict safety and design standards.
