Mauritius Tops Africa’s Happiness Rankings with Natural Appeal

1 min read

Mauritius has once again been named the happiest country in Africa, according to the 2025 World Happiness Report, ranking 78th globally with a score of 5.832. This achievement highlights the island nation’s continued success in combining economic resilience, political stability, and natural beauty to offer its citizens a high quality of life.

A key driver of this success is Mauritius’ strong and diversified economy. With a GDP per capita of $10,216 as of 2022, the country has managed to withstand global shocks, including the economic fallout from the war in Ukraine. Following a GDP growth of 3.5% in 2021 and a sharp rebound to 8.9% in 2022, growth is expected to remain strong, with forecasts of 6.1% in 2024 and 5% in 2025. Large-scale construction projects and a thriving tourism sector are at the heart of this momentum.

The nation’s political environment further supports its prosperity. Mauritius is one of Africa’s most stable democracies, with robust institutions and a transparent government that fosters a welcoming climate for both foreign investment and domestic development. This political stability has also contributed to Mauritius being ranked the safest country in Africa, outperforming popular destinations like Morocco and Egypt. Low crime rates, effective governance, and high human development indicators have all played a role in this distinction.

Beyond its economic and political strengths, Mauritius offers an exceptional natural environment that enhances everyday life. The island boasts over 100 miles of white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it a hotspot for water sports, dolphin-spotting, and whale-watching. Inland, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and protected national parks such as Black River Gorges and Bras d’Eau provide locals and visitors with rich opportunities for hiking and wildlife encounters.

Although its global happiness ranking has fluctuated over the years—from 43rd in 2017 to 70th in 2024—Mauritius continues to lead the African continent in well-being. Its unique blend of natural charm, economic strength, and social stability has positioned it as a model of joy and resilience in the region, offering lessons for other nations seeking sustainable paths to prosperity and citizen satisfaction.
