Mauritius has once again been named the happiest country in Africa, according to the 2025 World Happiness Report, ranking 78th globally with a score of 5.832. This achievement highlights the island nation’s continued success in combining economic resilience, political stability, and natural beauty to offer its citizens a high quality of life.
A key driver of this success is Mauritius’ strong and diversified economy. With a GDP per capita of $10,216 as of 2022, the country has managed to withstand global shocks, including the economic fallout from the war in Ukraine. Following a GDP growth of 3.5% in 2021 and a sharp rebound to 8.9% in 2022, growth is expected to remain strong, with forecasts of 6.1% in 2024 and 5% in 2025. Large-scale construction projects and a thriving tourism sector are at the heart of this momentum.
The nation’s political environment further supports its prosperity. Mauritius is one of Africa’s most stable democracies, with robust institutions and a transparent government that fosters a welcoming climate for both foreign investment and domestic development.
