Iraq has been elected as the deputy chair of the Middle East Committee at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) during its 51st meeting, a significant achievement for the country. The meeting, attended by Arab tourism ministers and other officials from various member states, marked a milestone for Iraq’s growing role on the regional tourism stage.

Nasser Ghanem Murad, the head of Iraq’s Tourism Authority, who led the Iraqi delegation, emphasised that the election reflects Iraq’s expanding influence in regional tourism and opens the door for stronger partnerships with neighbouring countries.

Iraq’s tourism delegation also used the meeting to highlight the country’s tourism potential, as it seeks to attract $7 billion in investments by 2025. Discussions were held with Arab officials to explore cooperation and future projects within the tourism sector.

To commemorate the occasion, the Iraqi delegation distributed souvenirs, including a booklet titled “Baghdad: Arab Tourism Capital 2025,” carpets featuring historical and archaeological images, and medals marking Baghdad’s role as the Arab capital of culture and tourism.

Looking ahead, Iraq is preparing to host a series of events as part of Baghdad’s selection as the Arab Tourism Capital in 2025, marking a significant chapter in the country’s tourism development.
