After nearly two decades of anticipation, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is set to officially open its doors on July 3, 2025. Located just two kilometers from the Pyramids of Giza, this $1.5 billion institution will be the world’s largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilization, showcasing over 100,000 artifacts spanning 3,000 years of ancient Egyptian history.

Among the museum’s most anticipated exhibits is the complete collection of artifacts from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. For the first time, all 5,600 items—including his iconic golden mask, chariots, and jewelry—will be displayed together in a dedicated 7,500-square-meter gallery. Additionally, visitors can explore the Khufu’s Boats Museum, featuring a 4,500-year-old solar barque believed to have transported Pharaoh Khufu into the afterlife.

The museum’s design, crafted by Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects, draws inspiration from the nearby pyramids, with a facade shaped like a pyramid and a grand staircase adorned with over 60 artifacts leading to the main galleries. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a colossal statue of Ramses II, setting the tone for the monumental experience that awaits.

Since its partial opening in October 2024, GEM has offered visitors access to the Grand Hall and 12 galleries. However, the upcoming full opening will unveil additional exhibits, including the much-anticipated Tutankhamun collection and Khufu’s solar boat. Egyptian authorities anticipate the museum will attract up to five million visitors annually, significantly boosting the country’s tourism sector.

Tickets are available online, with prices starting at EGP 1,200 (approximately $24 USD) for adults. The museum operates daily, with extended hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays to accommodate the expected influx of visitors. The Grand Egyptian Museum promises to be a transformative cultural landmark, offering an unparalleled journey through Egypt’s rich and enduring legacy.
