European Business Travel Spending Outpaces Trips

Europe’s corporate travel budgets are rising substantially faster than the number of journeys employees take. Research from the Global Business Travel Association projects spending of approximately €404 billion in 2026, a 7% annual increase.
The association expects trip volumes to rise by only about 0.7%. That gap suggests much of the growth in expenditure is being absorbed by higher prices, changes in journey mix or other costs rather than a comparable expansion in travel activity.
Employers have resumed many face-to-face meetings, conferences and international visits, but growing budgets make the return on each journey more important. Companies may become more selective about attendance, trip duration and the destinations they prioritise.
The spending forecast is an estimate rather than an audited account of completed journeys. Nevertheless, it captures a wider challenge for airlines, hotels and corporate travel managers: a market can generate record revenue while customers experience little increase in the amount of travel that money buys.
