Animal Welfare Management & Conservation Services of the Year – London, 2026

Care for the Rare is an international consultancy working at the interface between animal welfare, conservation, and evidence-based design and management. We help zoos, sanctuaries, and conservation programmes understand what their animals truly need to thrive and translate that evidence into practical solutions that deliver measurably better outcomes. Our work is grounded in behavioural ecology and welfare science, using proprietary assessment frameworks to identify species-specific welfare priorities and the root causes of welfare failure. We specialise in solving complex welfare challenges, rather than reactively mitigating the consequences of inadequate environments and management paradigms. Care for the Rare works globally with governments, conservation and animal welfare NGOs, zoological institutions, and private operators, supporting both existing facilities and programs and new developments. Our approach is driven by what animals fundamentally require to thrive, ensuring they can express those behaviours and cognitive processes that matter most to them and on their terms, while also de-risking investment, future-proofing facilities, and protecting social licence. Our aim is not to manage symptoms, but solve problems at their source.
