Disney to Build First Middle East Theme Park in Abu Dhabi

The Walt Disney Company is expanding its global reach with its first-ever theme park in the Middle East, set to open on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This marks Disney’s seventh resort destination and represents a significant leap into a rapidly growing market. The new park, developed in collaboration with Miral, a prominent UAE developer, will combine Disney’s iconic storytelling with the rich cultural heritage and stunning waterfront landscapes of Abu Dhabi.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, described the park as “authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati,” ensuring a seamless blend of Disney’s global characters and narratives with local cultural elements. The park will feature a variety of themed attractions, accommodations, dining experiences, and retail offerings that provide a unique twist on traditional Disney experiences while honoring the UAE’s culture.

The project will be fully funded and operated by Miral, with Disney’s renowned Imagineers leading the design and providing operational oversight. This partnership mirrors the approach used for Tokyo Disney Resort, where a local partner handles operations while Disney focuses on creative input. This structure ensures that the park maintains the magic of Disney while allowing it to align with the local context.

Strategically located on Yas Island, the new Disney park will complement existing attractions such as Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. This will help solidify Yas Island as a premier entertainment destination in the region, attracting visitors not only from the Middle East but also from Africa, India, Asia, and Europe. The location is expected to draw both tourists and residents, positioning the park as a global hub for entertainment and tourism.

While the official opening date has not yet been confirmed, Disney anticipates a two-year design phase, with construction expected to take up to five years. The park’s development highlights Disney’s commitment to expanding its presence and delivering immersive, culturally resonant experiences to a broader international audience.

With the Abu Dhabi theme park, Disney is not only expanding its portfolio but also creating a bridge between the UAE’s rich culture and its magical storytelling, setting the stage for a new era of immersive entertainment in the region.
