Greece’s tourism sector has achieved record-breaking numbers in both tourist arrivals and revenue in 2024, according to officials from the Ministry of Tourism. The country welcomed 35.9 million visitors, generating a total of 21.7 billion euros (approximately 22.8 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue, as announced by Vasiliki Koutsoukou, the Secretary General of Tourism Policy and Development, during a press conference in Athens.

The announcement precedes a major tourism exhibition set to take place in the Greek capital in March, further underscoring the country’s growing importance as a global tourist destination.

In comparison, 2023 had also been a record year for Greek tourism, with 32.7 million visitors contributing 20.6 billion euros in revenue, according to the Bank of Greece.

Despite global economic challenges, Greece’s tourism sector has demonstrated resilience, continuing its growth trajectory in the post-pandemic era. Officials credited this ongoing success to a combination of factors, including Greece’s appeal as a tourist destination and its effective adaptation to changing global circumstances.

In order to maintain this positive momentum, Greece is focusing on a strategy that prioritizes high-quality and sustainable tourism development, according to Koutsoukou. Tourism remains a critical pillar of Greece’s economy, contributing about 13 percent to the country’s GDP.

As the country celebrates these impressive numbers, the Greek government remains committed to supporting and expanding the tourism industry, ensuring its continued success for years to come.
